TheannouncementbyBritishPrimeMinisterTheresaMayonApril18thatshewould,subjecttoaparliamentaryvote,becallinganearlygeneralelectiontobeheldonJune8,hasshockedthecountry'spoliticalestablishment,andpromptednewquestionsoverthecountry'sfutureoutsidetheEuropeanUnion.BrexitisMay'sofficialreasonforreversingherearlierpledgenottoholdanearlyelection.TheprimeministerhopestoincreasethenumberofConservativemembersofparliament(MPs),andthusclaimafreshmandatefortakingBritainoutoftheEU.AConservativewinwouldlikelysilencethenumerousvoicesinBritainwhocurrentlyarguethatwhiletheprimeministermayhaveamandatetotriggertheprocessofleavingtheEUthankstolastyear'sreferendumresult,shedoesnothaveamandatetotakethecountryoutofboththeEUandthebloc'ssinglemarket––theso-called"hardbrexit"."ThecountryiscomingtogetherbutWestminsterisnot,"sheclaimed,inadigatmembersofbothHousesofParliamentwhoremainopposedtobrexit.TheleadersofBritain'soppositionpoliticalpartiesquicklyhittheairwavestoclaimtheywerereadyforanelection.Buttheyarenot,andTheresaMayknowsit.Infact,themainoppositionparties––theLabourPartyandLiberalDemocrats––arewoefullyunpreparedtotakeontheConservatives.WhileBritishpoliticiansusuallyclaimtheypaynoattentiontoopinionpolls,it'shighlyunlikelytheprimeministerisnotmotivatedbyrecentpollswhichputherparty18to20pointsaheadofthestrugglingLabourParty.TheabysmalratingsofLabour'sleader,JeremyCorbyn,thedividedstateofhisparty,alongwiththeshrunkenLiberalDemocrats,havemadethetemptationtotryandcashinontheapparentopportunitytoomuchtoignore.Mayfaceslimitedanddisorganizedoppositionandsheintendstotakefulladvantage.Maywillgotothecountryseekingafreshmandatetodeliverbrexit,andherintentions––totakethecountryoutoftheEUandthesinglemarket––willbeclearandeasytopresenttovoters.ForpeoplewhovotedtoremainintheEU,theelectionpresentsanewopportunitytodebatethetermsofbrexitandopposethe"hardbrexit"theConservativePartyintendstodeliver.Yetvoterslookingtoblockbrexitwillstruggletofindaneffectivepartytosupport.UnlesslargenumbersofConservativeremainsupportersdeserttheprimeministeroverherbrexitpolicy,votersopposedtotheConservativeswillhavetounitebehindasinglepartytokeepMayoutofDowningStreet.Thisisunlikely.Atpresent,theLiberalDemocratsseemthebestplacedtoofferacoherentalternativetotheformofbrexitMayisoffering.Theyhaverecentlywonaby-electionandclaimtohavesignedupthousandsofnewmemberssincetheJune24referendumlastyear.Theirleader,TimFarron,iscommittedtokeepingBritaininthesinglemarket.YettheyaretaintedbytheirtimeworkingwiththeConservativePartyduringthe2010-2015coalitiongovernment,andcurrentlyholdjustnineparliamentaryseatscomparedtotheConservative's330.Yetit'stheLabourPartythatseemscertaintobethebigloserofthiselection.Indeed,thelukewarmcampaigningfortheremainsideduringthereferendumbythepartyleaderhasbeensingledoutasabigcontributoryfactortotheresult.Corbyn,whoispartyleaderthankstothesupportofpartymembersanditsaffiliatedtradeunions,but––crucially––nottheparty'sMPs,willalmostcertainlyfacetheendofhispoliticalcareeronJune9.AndwhilemanyLabourMPsmaybedelightedtoseeCorbyngone,thepartywilllikelybereducedtoashadowofitsformerself.TheoneunlikelybutvaguelyplausiblescenariothatmustsurelyconcerntheprimeministeristhatLabourandtheLiberalDemocratsbothdobetterthanexpectedresultinginahungparliament––nopartywinsenoughvotestoformagovernment.Outofthispoliticalmess,theremightbethepotentialforsomekindofpro-EUcoalitiontobecobbledtogether,perhapswiththeScottishNationalParty.However,TheresaMayissettofightanelectionagainsttheweakestoppositionsincethe1980s.Shewillalmostcertainlywin,althoughsheshouldtakenothingforgranted.Certaintiesarebeingturnedontheirheadallaroundtheworld,andpollingiscurrentlysufferingadistinctlackofcredibility.Butwhenvoterslookatthechoicesonoffer,theywillseeapartywithaclearvisionforapost-EUfuture,setagainstaLabourleaderwhocannotevencommandthesupportofhisownMPs,andanumberofsmallerpro-EUparties.Thisprimeministerislucky,andtheJuneelectionisherstolose.JamesSkinnerisacontributingeditoratChinaDailywithanMAinInternationalRelations.HehasaparticularinterestinBritishandAmericanpolitics,aswellasglobalsecurityissues.
